for this critical mission. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're in a parking lot right outside the gaylord hotel. staging area for crews. take a look, see the trucks lined up, ready to go heading out, first wave later on this morning between 7:30 and 8:00. headed to new jersey, going to the blue claw stadium in lakewood, new jersey. where they will get marching orders, assignments and help restore power to the devastated area. as you can imagine, so much damage in new jersey. facing real challenges with fuel shortages and the like. so they will be bringing a lot of the stuff they need with them. you can see up on the truck, a lot of the fuses and things that they are likely going to have to replace and the situations they are presented with up there. they are traveling with their own diesel truck. they need gasoline up and running so they can to their job and help folks out. long hours facing these crews, about 1,500 going up to new

jersey. we talked to one of the crews this morning. jeff malabee, from the tidewater area, he says it's hard work, but very satisfying work. >> most of the customer base is extremely grateful and we do derive a lot of swakatisfaction. you get children holding up signs. i am sure we'll get the same thing. we are there to help with practically every other utility on the eastern seaboard. >> reporter: unclear how long they will be in new jersey, but they will be working lock hours, minimum 12-hour shifts is what they are expecting. meagan mcgrath. news 4. back to you. >> thank you. today, much anticipated october jobs report comes out. final jobs report before tuesday's election, the bureau of labor statistics considered delaying the report because of hurricane sandy.

another rough day for anybody trying to get around in new york and new jersey this morning. trying to get to work, get gas, or just get out of house, people are stuck waiting in traffic for hours. nbc's harry chick ma live in newark, with more on the backups on the roads and public transportation, which is slow, if moving at all, harry.

>> good morning, aaron. we are live here in downtown newark at the famous penn station. right now, quite infamous, the people and all of the community have been waiting in lines for gas and also now the train system. earlier, when we first got here, there was great news to report. four train lines were opened as a result of the new jersey transit great hard work. four lines to be open today. unfortunately, at 2:30 a.m., right before we went on the air for the first time, we were alerted three of the four train lines, mainline, coastline and rar i tan valley line could be shut down for the day as a result of power failure which happened due to major malfunctions this afternoon. that power failure affected the control system of these trains. now there, is some good news to report. the buss are running and there is one train line still running, the northeast corridor train, which travels from trenton to

new york city. they were able to get that one up. three of four train lines down as a result of power failure here. and once again, lines for gas are so long right now, personally, i had to wait 2 1/2 hours to get two miles yesterday to the lincoln tunnel, because you need to have four people in your car to get through the lincoln tunnel from jersey to manhattan, once again, live in newark at penn station. i'm harry chickma. >> new york city, newark, big destinations for amtrak. is amtrak able to run through penn station into new york yet? >> reporter: right now, we have not confirmed that. only dealing with the new jersey transit lines. i haven't heard anything about amtrak. not a good sign. needless to say, the city still is in turmoil with so much work to do, and the fact we have the northeast corridor train, a major improve, but commuters

university. president obama has spent some time at the school as well. there twice in october. the two candidates making a final campaign blitz across key states. virginia is one of them. they are both in ohio today. 6:34. a district heights police officer charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting a handcuffed suspect in the back. he'll be in court. sergeant johnny wily accused of shooting calvin kyle, whom he pulled over for riding a stolen motorcycle, after he was handcuffed and put in the back of a police car. kyle tried to run and that's when riley shot him. kyle is paralyzed from the waist down. federal prosecutors say former d.c. council chair kwame brown should spend six days in jail and three years on probation for bank fraud. court papers filed yesterday. brown resigned from council back in june after admitting he gave false information on applications to get two loans from banks worth more than 200,000. he could be sentenced up to six

months in prison for his crime. prosecutors say brown accepted responsibility for his misconduct and has no prior criminal record. the actual sentencing by a federal judge is set for november 3 1 3th. could be weeks or months before the man accused of throwing pipe bombs at three morn virginia homes is extradited to the commonwealth. laurence stewart ii was arrested. he drove all the way to the northwest and threw the bombs. police believe he was targeting his ex-girlfriend and two law enforcement officers who arrested him in the past. >> we've taken this very personal. this is a detective and deputy who was targeted, they and their families, as a result of just doing their jobs, in addition to that, this was an attack on an innocent victim of domestic violence, so we've taken this very personal. >> he could face charges in montana. police tried to pull him over there for speeding and he sped

some sort of altercation occurred, and a male was shot and killed. this entire area is blocked off. police say they will be on the scene for some time. as we get more information, of course, we'll pass it along. thank you, melissa. metro is working to reduce bus driver fatigue. operators fell asleep at the wheel 68 times over the past two years. drive cams capture the drivers nodding off. the bus activates when the bus makes a sudden stop or stop suddenly. half of those drivers worked two shifts in one day. and amtrak service getting back up to speed on the northeast corridor. tra trains running between new york and new york city this morning. and the rail system is in talks

to borrow trains from canada to provide more service to hard-hit new jersey and new york. some progress this morning in new york city's flooded subway tunnels. the water slowly pumped out. some water has receded on its own. no word when service through lower manhattan which saw the most amount of flooding of that particular borough is expected to be back up and running. entire system running on limited service. new york city marathon will go on as scheduled sunday morning. the group in charge of the race says it has turned the event into a fund-raiser to help victims of sandy. controversy surrounding sunday's race. some felt it would be trivial or too much of a burden on police. race organizers belief there is a 20% dropoff from last year because of the storm. frustrations mounting five days after sandy made landfall. many have been unable to go back to their homes because of impassable roads.

danielle leigh is live this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. behind me, the once world-famous bustling atlantic city boardwalk dismantled and empty. unrecognizable. u.s. long road to recovery, fema begins to open disaster centers, more than 30,000 have asked for aid. crews trying to remove debris and trying to get power back on in certain parts of new jersey, entire gas systems need to be rebuilt. hundreds still locked out. haven't been able to find out if their homes are still standing after sandy and losing patience. frustrated that this recovery can't happen sooner. newcomb i had cakeses because of sandy. traffic jams, long lines for gas and gas rationing, and there may be no rest for the weary. a winter storm headed this way and could get here well before

many get power back on next week. rising health concerns in some new england towns that experienced heavy flooding. in bridgeport, connecticut, the basements of hundreds of homes were flooded. now the musty garbage lines the streets, along with sewage that was brought to the surface, is making them sick. dom mondayon virginia has restored power to customers in our area, and now they are helping to get the lights on to hundreds in new jersey who are still in the dark. crews leaving today from national harbor and that's where news 4's meagan mcgrath is this morning. >> good morning. we have the staging area here at the gaylord hotel in national harbor. crews are sleeping, getting more shut eye before the huge task ahead of them. take a look at the trucks they have here. leaving in waves, the first wave leaving here this morning around
